Translation preparation : meaning transfer activity
Abstract/Description
The exercise describes what the instructor should do to prepare and deliver the assignment, what if any information should be shared and with whom, what supplies are required to complete the assignment, and what else users need to know or do to enhance and complete the assignment. In addition, the exercise lists the activities users must participate in to finish the assignment, including completion of lab activity steps, producing translations of ASL texts, and engaging in a Peer Feedback session using a Round Table Critique method.
This exercise was developed for the following course at Central Piedmont Community College: ASL-English Translation.
For assistance with developing a rubric for final translation, a sample "English to ASL Translation Activity" rubric is included with the activity. Criteria for the sample rubric include assessment of general target language achieved in ASL, ASL semantics, NMMs ASL facial grammar, fingerspelling, effective contextualization strategies, effective meaning transfer, and overall equivalent translation. Criteria are measure on a scale of either 1 (Beginning), 2 (Developing), 3 (Accomplished), or 4 (Exemplary).
